We are a “Humanity over Vanity” Salon. We do NOT de-mat pets due to the hazards and discomfort involved.

What is a Mat?
A mat is a dense tangle of fur in your dogs coat. Most of the time very tight and close to the skin.

What causes Matting?
Friction– Can be caused by everyday movement, harnesses/collars, or even clothing

Water– Causes pets hair to clump together. If not dried/brushed out properly can cause matting. Water also causes current mats to tighten and become closer to the skin.

Age Transitions- As a puppy grows up, they lose their ‘puppy coat’. The differences in textures of puppy & adult hair combining can cause matting to occur.

Other Causes– Hormone Changes, Diet Changes, Skin Conditions- All good things to talk to your vet about, if these are concerns!

How can I prevent Matting?
Consistent Coat Maintenance/Brushing-
We recommend brushing/maintaining your pet on a daily basis. This helps keep their coat in tip top condition, as well as alerts you to any new concerns before they may become a bigger issue.

Proper Brushes for Coat Type- If you have questions, let us help you find the appropriate options for your pet!

Consistent Grooming Schedule– This can vary based on you and your pets needs. Most pets are recommended to visit their Groomer on a 4-8 week interval.

Hairstyle/Length Changes– Sometimes an easier to maintain haircut is a better option for your pets lifestyle. Some pets have more fun in the deep brush or the lake, and long hair isn’t conducive without proper maintenance.

Concerns with Matting
*Can hide sores
*Allows moisture to sit on pets skin without a chance to dry out successfully. This can promote bacterial growth. *Uncomfortable/Painful for the pet- Some pets will lick & chew at the mats. This can cause more matting, or additional sores.
*Bruising and rash from tightness of mats.

Concerns with Matting Removal
*Razor Burn/Irritation- Due to the tightness of the mat, this brings their skin much closer to the fast moving clipper blades. Blades have to work harder, causing them to heat up faster.
*Uncomfortable for the pet. Think of the ‘pins & needles’ feeling of blood rushing to the surface of your skin. This is similar to what happens to the skin once a mat is removed.
*Hematomas- Ears are very sensitive and thin skinned. Mats on/around the ears being removed can cause the blood to rush to the tips, and pets will shake their ears due to the irritation.
